Authorised Government Agencies Found in the Ports
These are the list of approved Government found in the ports;
1. The Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS)
The Nigeria Immigration Services was extracted from the Nigerian Police Force in 1958 as a seperate entity entrusted with core immigration duties under the headship of the Chief Immigration Officer.
Some of the functions of the N.I.S include the following:
- Detecting fraudlent travel documents
- Boarder Patrol and investigation techiques functions
- Operation for more effective control of the Sea Ports and the Passport offices
2. The Nigerian Police Force (NPF)
The NPF is responsible for maintaining law and order in the Ports. In other words the Force helps to eradicate crime and disorder within its area.
3. National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
The NDLEA was established to eliminate the growing processing, manufacturing, selling, exporting and trafficking of hard drugs and there are prescribed stiffer penalties for convicted offenders.
4. National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC)
NAFDAC was inspired by a 1998 World Health Assembly resolution requesting countries help in combating the global health a threat posed by counterfeit pharmaceuticals and admist growing concerns about the growing problem of fake and poorly regulated drugs in Nigeria
5. Standard Organisation of Nigeria (S.O.N)
As part of stadardization and quality control activities, SON is actively involved in inport inspection of goods and quality assessment of the ports, thereby ensuring that only good in the presided National Standard parameters are allowed into the country.
In case where the deviation from the prescribed relevant standard specifications are wide enough to constitute health hazards, the defect consigment/containers are usually confistcated and destroyed at a date in the presence of parties concerned
6. Nigerian Inland Waterways
The Inland waterways department was established in 1959 to help in the development of inland water navigation and the progressive improvement of navigational condition along two major rivers, Benue and Niger.
